COOPERS ROAD HOUSING PHASES I AND II

A major urban regeneration project for the Peabody Trust and the London Borough of Southwark, involving the demolition of 1960’s blocks of flats and their replacement with mixed-tenure new-build housing. Circulation around the estate creates the public space. The private space is created within the courtyards with ground floor apartments having individual gardens. The boundary native planting has significantly increased the ecological diversity.

The Home Zones assist in the control of parking, pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures. Cycle storage, recycling and CHP have been fundamental to the success of the scheme. The consultation with tenants prior to decanting was extensive, with subsequent consultation for Phase II. The sustainable design for the new housing has achieved an Ecohomes award.
