The Sea Garden - Cardiff Bay, Wales

A commission from the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation for a public garden within the historic former Graving Docks as part of the restoration of the Cardiff Bay docklands area.

The Sea Garden explores the characteristics of the sea with maritime planting and the provision of three pools; a source pool, a still, planted pool and a large, shallow rock pool. The garden is sheltered on three sides by a wall using pale grey stone sourced from the Forest of Dean. The wall is perforated with slots which give glimpses to the sea.

The monochrome palette of stone and timber is enlivened by a copper bowl and copper wall cascade. Colour is ‘borrowed’ and brought into the garden from the reflected sky.
